As a senior in high school, my personal philosophy is to stay in school. School is very important but students may realize it when it’s too late.High school students and sometime college students put less important things before their schoolwork that can lead to extended school years or dropping out. School can shape you to be a better person as it did to me.
Throughout my high school years, I’ve seen many of my peers drop out of school. After my freshman year, I realized that many of my peers didn’t come back to school because they didn’t like school. When I see them today, I think that they could’ve made so much more for themselves if they would’ve stuck in school. Instead they’ve had to settle for whatever life has handed them.

Because I stayed in school, I feel like I have more opportunities than most people. When I was younger, a teacher told me, “An education is something no one can take away from you.” Although my school is an art school, I have developed a passion for the culinary arts. I am currently applying to various culinary schools around the state. I went through various programs outside of school to find my passion. I was in a Mock Trial at the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office sponsored by “Exploring Careers NYCDOE”. We went to Missouri in the summer of 2006 to compete against other teams. I learned a lot about the law and it was a great experience where I met a lot of new people.

I volunteered in a 5-week program at the radio station z100. My school counselor recommended this program to me so I could learn about public relations. I traveled to New Jersey after school twice a week and learned how the V.Js interact with their audience and recording artists. I received a certificate of completion for this program.
But I didn’t need to sign up to a program to find out what I really wanted to do. My interest in the culinary arts came from cooking with my mother for my family. I love cooking for my family because my adrenaline starts pumping and I like to see them smile about eating good food. I’ve been accepted into Johnson & Wales University, majoring in culinary arts. I am honored to have an opportunity to go to this University because many famous chefs have previously attended this school. I am the first in my school academy to receive an acceptance letter and I plan to attend in the fall of 2008. Until then, I am applying to as many scholarships as I qualify for.

Staying in school has helped me become a responsible young woman. I hope one day I will be able to inspire someone to stay in school or to go back to school. Perhaps one day I will inspire my peers to take interest in the culinary arts. Either way, it starts with school.
